Alpacas in California

Alpaca Resources

Becoming alpaca shepherds is a process of continuing education and consultation with the expert “shepherds” in the field. The learning curve can be very steep if you decided to jump in with both feet over a couple of weeks, or it can be gradual over a year or more. We know that by practicing safe, scientific, and modern care of our alpacas, the returns are alpacas that are healthy with the finest of fleece, conformation and progeny.

We encourage ongoing education and exploration in the world of alpaca breeding. Please take your time to look into the wide array of information on this page.

ALPACA ORGANIZATIONS

AOA – Alpaca Owners Association, Inc. was formed to promote public awareness and membership education of the alpaca’s qualities. This organization manages the national alpaca registry and provides forums for education regarding alpaca husbandry based upon the health, soundness and productivity of the alpacas.

CALPACA - California Alpaca Breeders Association is the oldest regional alpaca breeders association in the Northern Hemisphere and home to the oldest alpaca bloodlines in North America.

ALPACA FASHIONS/FIBER

Yocum McColl Wool Testing Labs has been in business since 1964 as an independently owned, commercial wool testing lab located in Denver, Colorado. They test raw wool for yield and fiber diameter.

Sun Valley Alpaca Co was originally created as Inca Fashions to increase awareness of alpacas and their luxurious fiber through the sale of gorgeous alpaca garments and related products.

ALPACAS HEALTH

Alpaca Research Foundation - The Alpaca Research Trust was established by the ARI Board of Directors in December, 1997 as a Colorado, non-profit corporation for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. The Board of Directors, of what is now known as the Alpaca Research Foundation, is composed of a select group of camelid veterinarians, research scientists and medical professionals. Their job is to establish research goals and critically evaluate research proposals from qualified research scientists.

Oregon State University - The Program for Camelid Education and Research at OSU has an excellent camelid program. You can find a number of helpful articles under "camelid" using the search tool on this page.

Ohio State University has one of the oldest and largest veterinary schools in the United States

Dr. Pollard’s Herbs - The products on this site were developed after many years of treating camelids using herbals for a variety of diseases.

BREEDING FOR IDEAL ALPACAS

ALPACA SUPPLIES AND TRAINING AIDS

Camelidynamics - Alpacas and llamas are among the most wondrous and mysterious creatures in the world. Yet handling and training them should be no mystery at all.
